Espiku is transforming the landscape of produced water. We are a team of scientists and energy experts dedicated to turning wastewater liabilities into strategic water and mineral assets. Backed by Breakthrough Energy and Halliburton Labs, and built on a foundation of successful DOE ARPA-E contracts, we are pioneering the technology that makes water circularity possible. Our salinity-agnostic systems produce clean water for reuse and generate the concentrated brine necessary for our partners to lead the charge in domestic mineral extraction.   • Bahman Abbasi

    PRESIDENT & CEO

    Dr. Abbasi is the lead inventor of the Scepter technology and a Breakthrough Energy Fellow. With over 20 years of experience across industry (General Electric), government (Technical Advisor to US DOE ARPA-E), and academia, he has led more than $11M in R&D funding to bridge the gap between laboratory concepts and field-ready energy systems.

  • Saskia van Meer

    OPERATIONS & COMMUNICATIONS

    Saskia leads Espiku’s commercial strategy, contract management, and stakeholder communications. She is instrumental in navigating the complex regulatory and business landscapes of the oil and gas water management sector.

  • Mathew Smith

    PRINCIPAL ENGINEER

    Mathew heads all shop operations, including the design, fabrication, and scale-up of the Scepter platform. A veteran of scaling energy technologies, he has spent 15+ years launching products in natural gas compression, thermochemical energy storage, and medical devices.

  • Mahyar Abedi

    THERMAL FLUIDS LEAD

    Dr. Abedi specializes in thermal-fluid systems and played a pivotal role in transitioning the Scepter platform to its current high-efficiency electric-powered design. He oversees thermal optimization and durability testing for our commercial-scale pilots.

  • Jacob Shorb

    RESEARCH ENGINEER

    Jacob worked in espiku’s technologies in 2019 and officially joined the team in 2023. He focuses on designing, building and conducting experimental research in espiku’s lab and fabrication shop. Jacob is motivated to see these technologies through to market. He completed his BS in Energy Systems Engineering from Oregon State University, Cascades.

  • Jesse Rubenstein

    ENGINEERING LAB TECHNICIAN

    Jesse has experience with hands-on engineering and design. Working in various manufacturing disciplines, he now focuses on designing and building pilot technologies in the fabrication shop. Jesse strives to bring espiku’s designs to life. He earned his BS in mechanical engineering from The University of Portland.
